According to a 2019 survey of women, nearly 70 percent of respondents who consume cannabis said that having sex after using cannabis made the experience more pleasurable. The study also found that women who used cannabis before sex were twice as likely to report orgasms compared to those who did not use cannabis. 

So what’s the link between sex and cannabis? 

According to a 2017 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, when the human body reaches a state of orgasm it releases various chemicals, including endocannabinoids. This response is something that makes us feel good and happens with behaviors such as eating food, exercising and yes, having sex.

What’s special about the specific type of endocannabinoid associated with orgasm is that it appears to look and function similarly to phytocannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Researchers hypothesized that the release of endocannabinoids “plays a role in the rewarding consequences of sexual arousal and orgasm,” so it stands to reason that using cannabis in the bedroom has the potential to deepen arousal and heighten orgasms.

So now you may be wondering, what’s the best way to use cannabis in the bedroom? When it comes to timing and what form of cannabis to try (flower, edibles or a topical), it’s recommended that you start low and take it slow. And experimenting on what works best for you and your partner will hopefully be part of the fun. 

Dosing and the amount of time it takes for you to feel the effects will also vary depending on how you choose to consume. 

Vaping or smoking are fast-acting methods that are easy to titrate and dial in for an optimal experience. Edibles, on the other hand, come with some challenges. They generally take much longer to take effect, and you and your partner are likely to peak at different times due to how much an individual’s physiology factors into when the effects of an edible kick in.

If you want to avoid inhalation methods, you could try a tincture that’s applied under the tongue and absorbed by the tissues in the mouth.
