So it’s not surprising that one of the most common non-recreational uses of cannabis is as a sleep aid. It makes sense that the same properties in cannabis that can relieve pain and soothe anxiety can help someone relax and unwind after a stressful day—but can cannabis also help you sleep?

The short answer is yes, cannabis does help with sleeping. But the relationship between cannabis and your beauty sleep is more complicated than you might realize.




Cannabis Strains for Sleep: The Roles of THC and CBD

The first thing to keep in mind when it comes to how cannabis affects your sleep is that not all cannabis strains are created equal. Typically, Indica strains are considered to be the ones that induce sleepy, relaxing feelings while Sativa strains tend to have energizing, excitable effects.

And while this is indeed often the case, choosing cannabis strains for sleep based purely on whether it’s an Indica or Sativa is not the most reliable selection method. A better way to think about choosing your sleepytime strains is their THC to CBD ratio.

While CBD has many known health benefits, THC and its psychoactive properties are responsible for inducing sleep, so generally, you’ll want a THC-dominant strain of cannabis.

A 2008 study also found that cannabis with higher levels of THC inhibits the stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM). This is the dreaming stage, and if you spend less time dreaming, in theory, you’re spending more time in “deep sleep,” the most restful stage of the sleep cycle. Reducing REM sleep could also be useful for people with PTSD who are struggling with insomnia due to nightmares.

However, not all sleep aids work for everyone the same way, and some high-THC strains have the potential to make someone more anxious and keep them from sleeping. Too much THC can also sometimes lead to feeling overly sleepy and groggy the next day. If you find that you’re sensitive to THC, you might want to try a strain that’s higher in CBD.



Cannabis Before Bedtime: A Matter of Timing

Timing is another key component to consider when using cannabis to help you sleep. Everyone’s physiology is different, so there are no hard-and-fast rules on when to consume cannabis before bed, but you’ll usually want to ingest cannabis at least an hour before you plan on going to sleep. If you try to use cannabis right before bed, even if it’s an Indica strain intended for sleep, the immediate effects might still cause excitability and keep you awake instead.

Timing is also why edibles, even though they’ll keep you asleep longer, are not typically recommended for use as a sleep aid. It can be difficult to time when exactly an edible will kick in, especially from person to person, and because the effects can last so much longer, you’re also more likely to wake up with an even more intense groggy “hangover” the next day.
